Grounds & Gardens Apprentice - Kent College – Horticulture level 2

Opportunity description

The Senior School occupies a semi-rural site of some 70 acres (280,000 m 2 ) on the edge of the city of  Canterbury and also owns the nearby Moat Estate, where there is  a farm, which is managed by staff and pupils, and extensive sports pitches.

The Junior School is located about a mile away and occupies at site of around 25 acres. It provides day school education for boys and girls between the ages of 3 months and 11, and boarding for children aged 7 and above. The grounds contain herbaceous borders, shrubberies, rockeries, tubs and hanging baskets and the successful candidate would working in all of these areas.

Working 30 hours per week Monday - Friday with occasional weekend, by the end of the course you will have a qualified in Grounds & Gardens Horticulture level 2 with YMCA Training.

Key duties:

  • To carry out a variety gardening duties, requiring a minimum amount of supervision
  • Preparation of specialist sports pitches and running tracks for field events with regular liaison with the sports department
  • Soil cultivation, digging, forking, watering, raking, weeding, edging, pruning, bed preparation and preparing and planting rockeries, herbaceous borders and shrubberies
  • Lawn maintenance and cultivation
  • The use and maintenance of basic light machinery including cylinder and rotary mowers, strimmers and leaf blowers
