Retail Apprenticeships

Retail involves a variety of key skills, including assisting customers, designing window displays and managing stock. This apprenticeship programme is ideal for you if you are starting a retail career, or if you are already working in the sector and wish to progress into a supervisory role. It is designed to help you gain knowledge, skills and understanding.

Apprenticeship qualifications
There are various pathways available to you at both intermediate and advanced levels.

Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 (12 months)

  • Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Retail Skills
  • Level 2 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Functional Skills Level 1 Mathematics
  • Functional Skills Level 1 English

Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 (15 months)
  • Level 3 Diploma in Retail (Sales Professional or Visual Merchandising or Management)
  • Level 3 Certificate in Retail Knowledge
  • Personal Learning and Thinking Skills
  • Employment Responsibilities and Rights
  • Functional Skills Level 2 Mathematics
  • Functional Skills Level 2 English

Entry requirements
You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week in a retail role. YMCA Training may be able to help you find an employer you can complete your apprenticeship with. You cannot apply for this course if you have a qualification at Level 4 or above, or are already in full-time education. To apply, you need to be living in England.

Learning methods
Your qualifications will be delivered within your workplace and sometime it may be necessary for you to attend sessions in one of our centres. You will need to do training while working as well as off-the- job training which will be discussed with you and your employer when you begin your Apprenticeship.

Assessment methods
Qualification assessments are carried out using a variety of methods such as observing you in your workplace, taped interviews, personal statements and witness testimonies. You will also need to build a portfolio of evidence.

Progression opportunities
Intermediate apprentices, with support and opportunities in the workplace, can progress onto the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Retail programme or the Level 3 Diploma in Retail Business. Advanced Apprentices may wish to continue their development with other individual qualifications including the alternative pathways within the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship framework. Alternatively those wishing to continue their skills development and qualifications beyond Level 3 could progress to Higher level retail qualifications in buying and merchandising, visual merchandising or generic qualifications in management, Foundation degrees in retailing or a BA Honours degree in retail.

Career possibilities
Once trained, Apprentices may be able to progress in their careers to roles including supervisory positions or specialisms within the sector.
