Playwork Apprenticeships

Working with children, this programme ensures Apprentices learn key skills such as safeguarding and wellbeing, communication, team working, customer services and employability skills, as well as Leadership and Management. Aimed at those wanting to start a career in the Playwork sector, it is also suitable for individuals already working in the sector who want to gain further skills and qualifications.

Apprentices achieve qualifications making them fully-rounded and well-qualified individuals with appropriate and thorough knowledge, technical skills and a positive attitude that is highly valued by the sector.

Apprenticeship qualifications

Intermediate Apprenticeship Level 2 (12 months)

Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 (18 months)

Entry requirements
You must be employed for a minimum of 30 hours a week in a role within the area of Playwork. YMCA Training may be able to help you find an employer to complete your apprenticeship with. You cannot have a qualification at Level 4 or above to apply for this course. You cannot have an existing qualification at a higher level than the apprenticeship framework you have chosen. You also need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education.

Learning methods
Your qualifications will be delivered within the workplace and in some locations you may be required to attend sessions within our centres. You will need to do on and off the job training which will be discussed with you and your employer when you begin your Apprenticeship.

Assessment methods
Qualification assessments are carried out using a variety of methods such as observing you in your workplace, taped interviews, personal statements and witness testimonies. You will also need to build a portfolio of evidence.

Progression opportunities
On completing this programme Intermediate Apprentices can progress onto advanced level programmes such as the Advanced Level Apprenticeship in Advanced Playwork. Gaining Level 3 and above qualifications either as part of an Advanced Level Apprenticeship programme or in an further education college will allow candidates to become assistant managers and managers in play settings and be in charge of their qualified staff.

Career possibilities
Playworkers are employed by local authorities, voluntary organisations and private companies. Job roles are varied and can include Assistant Playworker, Play Centre Assistant, Playworker and Senior Playworker. Some full-time roles are available but most employment opportunities within Playwork are part time. Some are seasonal, for instance in the school holidays.
