Celebrating apprenticeships

Apprenticeship

Last year, YMCA Training supported 2352 learners working towards apprenticeships and advanced apprenticeships in areas such as childcare, learning and development, health and social care and business administration.

We provide apprenticeships for an employer’s existing staff member, or we can match a young person with a suitable business in which they can work towards their apprenticeship.

Apprenticeship success stories

Chelsea Woolley, Chester

17-year-old Chelsea Woolley joined YMCA Training in Chester on an apprenticeship in children’s care learning and development (CCLD) straight from school.  Many of her friends had gone onto the sixth form, but Chelsea made the decision to join YMCA Training and follow her dream of working with children.

In just 12 months, Chelsea completed both an apprenticeship and an advanced apprenticeship in CCLD and hasn’t looked back – she is now a full time staff member at The Arches School in Blacon, Chester.

Head of enhanced provision at The Arches, Sue Willoughby, said: “Chelsea is adaptable and willing to take on new responsibilities.  She is wonderful with the children in her care – her calm manner enables the children to work well in a safe, caring and happy atmosphere.”

Chelsea said:  “I knew my future was working with children from an early age – I get so much out if it, and really enjoy it.”

Lee Rennison, Salford

Lee Rennison, 20, joined YMCA Training Salford on a horticulture apprenticeship programme in June 2008 and in 15 months achieved his full apprenticeship as well as raft of experience in his chosen career.
During his apprenticeship Lee carried out his work placement at the Manchester United football training ground, gaining valuable training in sports turf maintenance.

As well as hands-on experience, Lee also achieved key skills qualifications in communications, numeracy, working with others and improving own learning.

Lee said: “I worked really hard to achieve my apprenticeship and had great support from YMCA Training and my placement employer.”

Lee now works full time as a groundsman at the Daveyhulme Park Golf Club, and is receiving excellent feedback from his employer.
