Courses that suit you

Specialist coursesIf you want to learn and train to get new skills, but your personal situation means that the courses detailed so far in this section aren't for you, don't click away - we could still help. A number of our centres run projects that provide the support and training needed in the local community. Contact your local centre to see what community projects they offer. The following examples will give you an idea about what could be available:

Young Mums To Be

If you're about to become a young parent, YMCA Training can help you to prepare for your new life.

For example, some of our centres run a 'Young Mums To Be' course for 16-19 year old pregnant women.

It lasts 12 weeks and will prepare you for being a mum. The course covers 12 different areas, such as healthy lifestyle, baby care, money management and future planning. You can just pick the units that you think will be useful to you.

Similar courses for young mums are also available at other centres. Contact your local centre for more information.

Modern art

Our Leeds centre runs a course called CANVAS, a project for young people aged between 13 and 19 who aren't at school or employed.

If you like art, then this project could be for you. You'll do graphic design, graffiti, drawing and sculpture and you'll make a professional portfolio of your work. You can also learn computer and technical skills and get support with reading, writing and maths.

What's the point?

This course will put you on the right track so you can go back to school, do more training or get a job.
