Motor Vehicle

With almost 33 million vehicles on UK roads*, motor vehicle technicians play a vital part in keeping Britain moving.

A Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship will put you in the driving seat, to give you the skills to become a respected, qualified vehicle technician and develop your career in this essential industry.

You will need to be practical, able to use your own initiative and keen to develop a career in the motor vehicle industry. If this sounds like you then read on for more details about what the course involves:

During your Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship,

You will learn:

  • The practical skills involved in all aspects of motor vehicle work including:
    • Fast fit services
    • Replacing brakes
    • Tyres
    • Steering
    • Mechanical/engine problems and solutions
    • Panel-beating and paintwork
  • The knowledge and practical skills to be able to strip and rebuild a vehicle
  • The workings of individual vehicle parts through practical and computer-based programmes
  • How to assess vehicle problems and implement solutions
  • How to deal with customer queries politely and efficiently
  • Relevant health and safety information

You will achieve:

  • An NVQ Level 2 (Apprenticeship) or Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship) as a Vehicle Technician
  • Motor Vehicle Technical Certificate Level 2 (Apprenticeship) or Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship)
  • Key Skills Level 1 (Apprenticeship) or Level 2 (Advanced Apprenticeship) in Application of Number, Communication and Information Technology
  • Training in Health and Safety, First Aid and Manual Handling
  • Employment Responsibilities & Rights

YMCA Training will:

  • Give you a full induction so you are prepared to start your Apprenticeship
  • If you are not currently working in a Motor Vehicle role, we will help you to find a job in which you can work towards the Apprenticeship
  • Visit you regularly to assess your progress and observe you in the workplace
  • Provide the appropriate off the job training
  • Support and guide you throughout your course

Entry requirements:

Apprenticeships

There are no specific entry requirements for this Apprenticeship and you don’t need to have any qualifications already. You will need to have a reasonable level of literacy and numeracy. You also need to show that you:

  • Are committed to the training
  • Have a real interest in working in the motor vehicle industry
  • Have the ability to achieve the Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication

Advanced Apprenticeships

For an Advanced Apprenticeship you either need to have completed the Apprenticeship, or be able to show that you have skills and knowledge at the level required to achieve an Apprenticeship.

You should have a good level of literacy and numeracy and in addition to the qualities required for an Apprenticeship, you should also be:

  • Able to work on your own initiative
  • Self-disciplined
  • Confident and able to take responsibility and guide others

Availability:

A Motor Vehicle Apprenticeship is only available in a limited number of centres, so please contact your local centre to see if they offer it. If not, we will register your interest and keep your details on file, as with enough demand the centre may be able to offer the course in the future.

Course length:

The course is flexible so that you can take the time you need to achieve the different elements. Most people take between 12-14 months to complete the Apprenticeship and around 18 months to finish the Advanced Apprenticeship.
