Shane joined the Foundation Learning programme in YMCA
Training Dover at the age of 17 after attending an
introductory 'Back on Track' course with Connexions.
He felt the training would help his self confidence in making a
further move into employment. His varied interests in music and
sports, together with his career interests in retail and medical
field of work were the focus of attention during his training.
Shane was also working to achieve Level 1 qualifications in
Functional Skills English and Maths, together with an Award in
Personal and Social Development.
Shane established himself as a very supportive and popular
member of the group, often helping other learners with their work.
During promotional events, Shane would accompany training staff to
careers and training fairs to promote Foundation Learning and
encourage young people to join the programme. On two occasions he
won the "Learner of the Month" award for effort and commitment to
his programme of study.
Once Shane had an established routine towards his academic
studies, his training progressed to include a retail work
placement. When unable to secure a place in a music shop, Shane
took the opportunity to work in the local Poundstretcher store.
Although apprehensive about meeting the needs of an adult work
environment, Shane attended the placement interview, accompanied by
his training adviser, and was immediately accepted for work
experience one day a week. Within two weeks Shane's confidence had
grown enormously and he gave the commitment to work two days each
week in addition to his study days within the training centre.
After six weeks of this placement Shane had impressed the
company with his commitment and personality to such a level that he
was offered a full time position in the
store.
Shane said: "The Foundation Learning programme was a great help
to me, it boosted my confidence and helped me learn new skills,
they gave a good work placement and through that I now have a full
time position at Poundstretcher in Dover. Without the training
programme I wouldn't be where I am today - I'd like to thank all
the staff at YMCA Training at Dover for all their support and
help.
