18-year-old Andrew joined the FL programme at YMCA
Training Northallerton in 2010.
Andrew first came to YMCA Training to
gain qualifications and to help him find some direction in his
life. He was living with his step-father and brother and the
relationship was very turbulent following the death of his
mother.
Andrew was asked to leave his home along with his brother and
found himself sofa-surfing. With Richmond YMCA, YMCA Training
worked to find Andrew accommodation and help support him through
this very difficult time. Living independently was a huge change
for Andrew, but he continued with his education and came into the
centre to complete his work.
Andrew's confidence grew along with his qualifications, and
alongside this, Andrew developed a much greater understanding of
his emotional needs and he has finally been able to deal with his
grief after the loss of his mother.
Overcoming each and every barrier that has been in his way is an
exceptional achievement in itself, but Andrew's self-motivation was
second to none. He is constantly enthusiastic about everything he
does and he is an absolute inspiration to staff, friends and his
fellow residents. Throughout the most difficult period of his life,
Andrew continued to give selflessly to his community, volunteering
at local environmental projects and contributing to his local
council's Countryside Service.
Andrew's achievements have allowed him to progress onto an
Apprenticeship programme and, through collaborative working with
YMCA Training and YMCA Richmond, he has been able to access
wrap-around support.
Andrew said: "I think I have done very well since I started at
YMCA Training and I am proud of everything I have achieved. I did
not really think that I would be living on my own and working
through an Apprenticeship when I started but I am really positive
about the future and looking forward to it."
Andrew is now taking part in a street operative Apprenticeship
with Nordic Pioneer and also volunteers at the YMCA charity shop in
Richmond.
