Eight young learners from YMCA Training Norwich were
given the opportunity to work with Norfolk Fire Service on a recent
search and rescue exercise.
The Fire Service gave a detailed demonstration on how to rescue
a potentially injured person from the bottom of a disused chalk pit
using a harness and winch, demonstrating the importance of health
and safety, team work and good communication.
The learners were then set two challenges. In pairs they had to
see who could winch the injured person to safety in the fastest
time, as well as tying a range of different safety knots. They were
also given the opportunity to be harnessed down the chalk pit with
the full support of the Fire Service.
The learners really enjoyed the experience - many thanks to the
Norfolk Fire Service for the great opportunity!
